About WIZA

Whidbey Island Zymurgy Association or WIZA was started by a bunch of guys that loved the science and art of making good tasting beer. Nine of WIZA’s 15 charter members were instructors or educators of some kind and always interested in learning more. Experimenting with every aspect of every process was our goal. The number of different colors, textures, weights and flavors achieved has been astronomical. Not all of them good but not all bad either. And some have been incredible. Those of us in the beginning learned a lot and are still learning today. Some of us are dedicated to traditional styles and some experiment with different adjuncts or spices. Members of WIZA dabble in all forms of fermentation and we have very many cider, mead, and wine makers as well.

During 2010 and early 2011 a half dozen or so of us tossed around the idea of starting a club to share this knowledge and love of homemade beer. We did some research, cut and pasted other clubs charters and bylaws and eventually came up with some guidelines to form WIZA. It wasn’t until the 25th of August that we held our first meeting. We had nine home brewers present and all of us excited about forming the club. Until then there were no clubs on Whidbey Island and the closest club was in Mount Vernon, WA over 30 miles away. Since the first meeting we have grown and ideas for functions, events and all sorts of “things to do” keep coming. WIZA strives to be a big part of the home brewing community and continues to grow.

Terry and Carol at Whidbey Island Homebrew Supply have been a huge source of information, not only with getting us started but as we explore different subjects at each meeting they supply us with a wealth of information on products, techniques, ingredients and other ideas to educate all home brewers.

WIZA looks forward to meeting everyone interested in home brewing beer, mead or wine. You don’t have to brew beer to join WIZA. All you need is a desire to learn about where great tasting beer comes from!
